1.1 Background This book is intended to provide a simple introduction to elementary concepts of the theory and practices of computer science. It attempts to give a brief account of the subject matter of this field, which is expanding at an amazing rate. The first chapter presents the fundamental hardware and software. The second chapter presents the main object of our study; that is, the digital computer, and deals with the fundamental theory of digital computers. The third chapter gives some indication of the wide range of applications of computers in the human society. The fourth chapter discusses the problem of the superiority of computers as compared to humans in problem solving activities. The fifth chapter surveys some of the fundamentals of the theory and design of computers. The sixth chapter discusses the operation of the computer. The seventh chapter describes programming languages. The eighth chapter talks about data and communications in the computer. The ninth chapter deals with the financial and commercial applications of computers.
Chapter 1 The fundamentals of computers is now a vast and rapidly expanding field of study. The study has two objectives. First, it studies how computers work and secondly, it studies what they can do. This book deals with the first aspect of the subject. The mathematical foundations of computers, as opposed to the first aspect, has been studied in some detail in other texts. There is a book titled Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science by S. S. Margulies, published in 1974 by the Springer-Verlag Company. It is a much more complicated subject than this book. A simpler text is Introduction to Computer Science by F. C. Pomerance, published by Cambridge University Press in 1975. I have made some attempt to develope the fundamentals of computers in this book.
